About

The Canberra Short Film Festival, now in it’s thirteenth year, is a national competition and Canberra’s premier short film festival presenting quality regional and national short films. Funded by the ACT Government, the festival is a celebration of Australian filmmaking and is firmly positioned on the Canberra cultural calendar with it’s unique bohemian atmosphere; attracting the crowds from all across Australia to the Dendy Cinemas in Canberra.

The CSFF also holds workshops and forums with eminent industry professionals which prove extremely popular for our filmmaking community. This years workshops include Filmmaker Networking (Schmooze; how to network effectively with producers and actors), The 48 hour Film Festival Forum, Online film distribution strategies (conducted by the ACT Filmmakers Network) and Final Cut Pro editing with Silver Sun Pictures Senior Editors.

Previous workshops have included;

Cate Shortland Director - Art of Directing
Bronwyn Kidd Flickerfest - Distributing Your Short
Lucy Baker Screenwriter - The Art of Writing a Feature
Brooke Rushton Cinematographer - Shorts on Film & 35-mm Lenses
Ruth Saunders AFTRS - Sales and Distribution
Grant Thompson Producer - The Industry for Actors
Matthew Marshall Scriptwriter - Getting the Script Right
Simon Weaving Director - Cracking Tropfest

The Festival saw an overwhelming 300 entries from both Canberra Region and Australia and our competitions include; National, Regional, Youth & Schools screenings - of which some selections go on to receive prestigious awards at major international film festivals.

What we hope to achieve this year is to provide filmmakers and actors positive feedback for their work, utelising a fair judging system which will provide maximum benefit to their development. Our judging system is based on a criteria which is based on criteria scoring and commentary from respected and leading industry professionals.

History

The Canberra Short Film Festival (CSFF) strongly supports the makers and producers of Australian short films. Its beginnings in 1996 saw Australian made short films screened as an enjoyable addition to the Canberra International Film Festival's program.

The overwhelming popularity of this annual short film mini-festival inspired organisers to hold the first solo CSFF in 1999 with two separate competitions - the National Short Film competition and the Young Canberra Filmmaker's competition.

That year 30 short films where selected and screened to packed houses, receiving rave reviews. Since then the festival has grown exponentially, with over 200 short films and music videos being submitted in 2007.

2002 saw the retirement of Festival Director Cris Kennedy who had lovingly run the festival since its inception in 1996 and marked the introduction of new festival directors, Marisa Martin and Matthew Fallon from EoR Media who began developing it into the vibrant festival it is today. 2007 saw Marisa take the solo role of Festival Director before passing it on to the team at SilverSun Pictures for the 2008 event, citing that the festival 'needs fresh blood and new ideas'.

2008 sees a new beginning for the CSFF, as local film production house SilverSun Pictures takes over responsibility for co-ordinating the event. The team of creative professionals at SilverSun has a flare for innovation, providing Canberra with Film and Television production for over a decade. SilverSun plans to take the reigns with new-found enthusiasm and hopes to deliver a vibrant short film season.

Welcome to the Canberra Short Film Festival!

JUDGING

The Canberra Short Film Festival has a three tiered judging system, so the winner of Best Film in each category must have a wide appeal – to industry judges and audience. Where there is a judging panel, they are guided to choose films that have a ‘good story, well told'.

Stage 1: Preliminary

Films are screened to a panel of preliminary judges who create a short-list of 100 minutes of films in each competition category. There are three people on each panel and one panel per category.

Stage 2: Audience

These short-listed films are then screened to audiences over the duration of the festival. The audiences will be given the opportunity to vote for their favourite films from the short-list in each category.

Stage 3: Finals

The top three films as voted by the audience in each category are then screened in a finals sessions to a panel of industry judges, who will decide the best film in each category.
