CROCODILE DUNDEE: THE 4K ENCORE CUT

The Grainery/RIMFIRE FILMS

The iconic 1986 Australian film “Crocodile Dundee” has received a significant audio restoration thanks to the work done at SilverSun Pictures in Canberra.

The original film was only ever screened with a stereo soundtrack, but the team at The Grainery and Silversun Pictures uncovered a Dolby Stereo version being held at the NFSA  that was likely produced in the 1990s but never released. This version was decoded to a 5-channel surround mix, and each channel was meticulously restored and remastered to create a new master for upmixing to 7.1.4 Dolby ATMOS for both theatrical and home cinema versions. The Dolby Home Cinema mix was completed at SilverSun Pictures in Canberra and the team then visited Soundfirm in Sydney to master the Dolby certified theatrical mix. During the session, Roger Savage (CEO and founder of Soundfirm and Australian film industry veteran) popped his head in for a chat and it turned out he was the Sound Supervisor on the film back in 1986. Needless to say, he had some stories to tell.

One of the most exciting aspects of ATMOS is the use of object-based audio which creates a more dynamic and immersive experience for viewers. The restoration team (Rohan Taylor & Tim Duck), used these features to embellish some of the sound effects from several key scenes in the film. In the Kangaroo hunting scene, for example, bullet flybys were added as audio-objects and positioned above the audiences’ heads to create a more exciting and immersive experience.

The audio restoration and upmix to Dolby ATMOS was just a part of the extensive remastering work that has been completed on Crocodile Dundee. The film is also being released in stunning 4K resolution with a full film restoration completed by the Grainery in Canberra. The restored print showcases the beauty of Russell Boyd’s cinematography of the Australian outback in a whole new light. The new version of the film, titled “CROCODILE DUNDEE: THE 4K ENCORE CUT”, is premiering this week on Sydney Harbour at the Westpac OpenaAir and will be released in Australian cinemas in mid-2025.
